Trends and Factors That Contribute to Positive Outcomes in Rural Communities
Various sources have identified rural areas as having a stronger sense of community, lower environmental pollution, stronger patient-provider relationships, and greater access to/opportunities for outdoor activities and exercise. However, to our knowledge, this information has not been summarized in a report or peer-reviewed publication. This project will review literature on rural health to identify outcomes where rural residents outperform urban residents. Using existing resources from previous related projects and additional research, this study will summarize trends and factors contributing to these positive outcomes. While rural areas face challenges such as limited resources and transportation, certain aspects of rural life support better health outcomes. This project will provide the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy with valuable information it can use to inform policies that support rural residents' ability to thrive in their communities.
