This study estimated shortages of nurses and allied health personnel among rural hospitals in order to gauge the difficulty experienced by rural hospitals in recruiting such personnel. Additionally, the study examined strategies these hospitals employ in recruitment and retention of nurses, and addressed strategies that might effectively address such shortages.
